Learn about the tradition of Shibari Japanese rope bondage and the principles of knot tying for suspension and self-suspension.

PaperDolls began exploring the Japanese tradition of Shibari and Kinbaku rope tying during the production of our show ‘Constellations’ which won the Spirit of the Fringe 2012. Shibari is a technique of bodily suspension using hemp and jute rope. We started exploring self-suspension and the suspension of others in a dynamic way for Constellations and really liked the organic and essential elements of the rope and the construction of aerial apparatus using knots and ties. The visual element also really appealed to us and we’ve continued to explore using the ropes performatively and integrating it with the more conventional circus aerial apparatus including aerial hoop and corde lisse (acrobatic rope).

PaperDolls will be teaching two Shibari self-suspension workshops in the Circus Factory Cork on April 6th and 7th from 10 – 1pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Our style of Shibari self-suspension is a physical, intellectual and highly visual practice that has really informed the recent work of PaperDolls and continues to influence our unique and unconventional approach to aerial arts. This is a perfect taster opportunity for those interested in knots, ropes, flight and dangling in midair!

Open to beginners, non-aerialists and professional circus practitioners alike
